Vegetarian Diet

A vegetarian diet is mostly plant based that excludes meat, poultry, and fish. Many vegetarians do consume dairy as well as eggs. The vegetarian diet is rich in vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, whole grains, and legumes.

Many can choose a vegetarian diet for a variety of reasons not limited to: morals, religion, culture, environment, economy, politics, society, taste, or overall health.

Choosing to be a vegetarian can improve one’s health, but a properly planned diet needs to be in place to satisfy all nutritional needs. Consuming a variety of vegetables and fruits will contribute to many health benefits such as a fiber, vitamins, micro-nutrients, and antioxidants. A vegetarian diet is naturally low in cholesterol and fat, which can reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other obesity-related diseases.

  • Beans

  • Seeds and Nuts

  • ‘Healthy’ Oils

Foods to Exclude:

  • Meat

  • Fish

There are many reasons that vegetarian diets are healthy, and may lead to weight loss, high blood pressure, and improve energy levels. However, proper caution needs to be taken to ensure that you are getting all the proper nutrients such as B vitamins and iron.
